OTTAWA, On. — The Canadian Taxpayers Federation held its ‘Gas Tax Honesty Day’ annual event to blow the whistle on the high taxes levied on drivers.

New numbers from the CTF shows Canadians will pay $21-billion this year in taxes on fuel.

Fuel is taxed on the price per litre and then that price is then taxed yet again.

The CTF says this is unfair because essentially you’re being taxed on tax, and this year it will cost drivers $1.7-billion.

The group says this unfair practice needs to end and the money Canadians will save can be used to stimulate the economy and create jobs.

The group adds we’re not even seeing the proper return on investment for these taxes, because road conditions have actually gotten worse as government revenues have gone up.
