Local jockey confident heading into the Belmont Stakes

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver jockey who’s claimed the first two legs of the Triple Crown is confident about the upcoming third and final race.

Mario Gutierrez and I’ll Have Another won the Preakness this past weekend after winning the Kentucky Derby two weeks earlier.

Gutierrez says he’s keeping all his focus on the Belmont Stakes. “[I’m] trying not to do too much right now. Chill out for a little bit. Do my racing this week. When the time comes, I’m going to start thinking about the Belmont and leave a little earlier to be there.”

He adds his horse is capable of doing amazing things, so he feels his chances at winning the Belmont are good.

“I try not to put too much pressure on myself right now. Just taking one race at a time and whatever is meant to happen, will happen.”

Gutierrez says growing up in Mexico he didn’t know much about the horse racing world outside of his small town.
