Whitecaps can clinch first-ever Canadian championship

By

TORONTO (NEWS1130) –  The Vancouver Whitecaps and Toronto FC settle the AMWAY Canadian Championship tonight at Toronto’s BMO Field (Rogers Sportsnet One 5 p.m.)

The two teams played to a 1-1 draw last Wednesday in the first leg at BC Place. A victory will put Vancouver into the CONCACAF Champions League play for the first time. A 1-1 tie would send the teams to extra time but a 2-2 draw and up would clinch the series for Toronto due to goals-away.

Toronto has won the event three times including last year, when rain and lightning forced a full replay of the final between Toronto and Vancouver which the Whitecaps were leading. Toronto would win the replay and advance for a third time.

This year’s Major League Soccer season has been a disaster for Toronto, which has yet to register a point in nine league matches. Toronto is expected to get captain Torsten Frings back in the lineup from a shoulder injury. The German international missed the first leg of the final.

It continues to be a busy week for Vancouver. The Whitecaps are in the midst of a four game in 12-day stretch that finishes this Saturday with a road game at the Portland Timbers.
