Michael Dunahee’s mom stays hopeful on Missing Children Day

VICTORIA (NEWS1130) – Today is a day to remember children who have disappeared and the families that have been left behind.

News1130 is speaking with the mother of a boy who went missing in March of 1991 in Victoria. The four-year-old hasn’t been seen since.

Michael Dunahee‘s mom Crystal tells us even though it’s been 21 years, she is still hopeful for answers. “As long as you don’t have that closure, you have to stay hopeful. After all, what kind of message does that put out there to other missing children… what would happen to them?”

International Missing Children’s Day is getting even more attention this year, with an arrest in the disappearance of six-year-old Etan Patz, who vanished in New York City in 1979.

“I’ve been following the case… and I heard [about the arrest] last night,” says Dunahee. “It is a relief for the family, but it is not over yet… still a long road a head for them.”

Patz was one of the first to appear on the back of a milk carton.

“Missing Children’s Day is always going to be there because we still have missing children out there,” maintains Dunahee.

Today also marks the eighth anniversary of BC’s AMBER Alert program.

Mounties say stranger abduction remains one of the least likely causes for a child to go missing. But with cases like Dunahee’s and others, the fear never goes away for families.
