VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There’s plenty of action in store this weekend for the local sports fan.

The Vancouver Whitecaps return to league action tomorrow when they visit JELD-WEN Field in Portland, Oregon to play the Timbers. The Whitecaps will try to return to their winning ways after losing the AMWAY Canadian Championship final to Toronto FC on Wednesday night.

The Timbers, which also joined Major League Soccer as an expansion team in 2011, won their last meeting with Vancouver,1-0 on October 2nd,  2011, which was the Whitecaps’ first game at newly-renovated BC Place Stadium. Portland won their only other meeting, 2-1 in Portland in August of 2011.

Portland (3-5-3) have had a difficult start to the Major League Soccer season but are coming off a home win over the Chicago Fire that ended a three-match winless run.  Playing at home in what it is always a hostile atmosphere in the Rose City,  Portland will have plenty of inspiration as they can move to within three points of fourth-place Vancouver in the MLS Western Conference.  Game time Saturday is 7 p.m.
