Children’s fest back for another year

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver International Children’s Festival is back for another year.

The six-day fair-for-kids kicks off on Tuesday.

Last year, the festival moved to Granville Island from Vanier Park, and executive director Katharine Carol tells us this year the performances will be confined to one area of the island.

“Patrons had to cross Granville Island streets which can be very difficult with lots of little children. We’ve contained the festival to one side of the island. We have three activity zones on the south side.”

Plus, the event will feature a new medium.

“We have a film from England called The Itch of the Golden Nit,” she says. “I think it’s the first time the festival has had film, as far as I know. It’s a really special film. It’s not a film that will be shown in general release. It was created for the Olympics in the UK, as part of their Cultural Olympiad.”

The festival’s future was in doubt last year, after it lost provincial and federal funding. But Carol points out they managed to attract 30,000 people last year, which helped keep it afloat.
