New York City to enact ban on soda sales

By

New York City is making plans to enact a ban on the sale of large sodas and other types of sugary drinks at restaurants, movie theatres and street carts.

The New York Times said this marks the most ambitious effort by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and his administration to combat rising obesity levels.

Sales of any cup or bottle of a sweetened drink larger than 16 ounces – about the size of a medium coffee and smaller than a common pop bottle – would be prohibited under the new ban, which could take effect as soon as March 2013.

It would mark the first ban in the U.S. to date.
