Heartless thief steals teenager’s wheelchair

COQUITLAM (NEWS1130) – We have good news in the story of a teenager from Coquitlam left house-bound for weeks after the theft of her wheelchair.

After our first report aired just after 11 a.m. today, a man who wishes to remain anonymous called News1130 to say he’s able to fit the girl with a new wheelchair. The girl will be given the new chair on Monday.

Despite the happy ending, police still want to find out who’s responsible. The theft happened more than seven weeks ago.

“The family usually leaves the wheelchair for their 15-year-old daughter under the staircase on the ground floor because of the weight,” explains Corporal Jamie Chung with the Coquitlam RCMP.

“She relies on the wheelchair to go out of the house. The wheelchair was an offer from the Vancouver Children’s Hospital,” he adds.

The chair was taken from an apartment on Cottonwood Avenue near North Road on April 10th.

Chung says police have exhausted all efforts trying to find the original chair, but an appeal was only made to the public today, nearly two months later.
