VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Former BC Liberal cabinet minister-turned BC Conservative MLA John van Dongen will get to play a bigger role looking into why the province paid hefty legal bills for two former aides who admitted to wrongdoing in the BC Rail scandal.
The BC Supreme Court has granted van Dongen intervenor status in the case.
Van Dongen says he can bring a unique perspective as a former solicitor general, but he insists he’s not politically-motivated and won’t just air dirty laundry about the government and cabinet he used to sit in.
“I am a non-partisan person doing my job as an MLA representing the constituents of Abbotsford South and the people of British Columbia,” he insists.
“I am moving forward and have been engaged in the application for intervenor status in a manner that is respectful of the courts and removing any politics.”
The case was launched by Auditor General John Doyle, who wants to see documents related to the $6 million in legal fees paid for Dave Basi and Bobby Virk, who pleaded guilty to leaking government secrets involving the 2003 BC Rail sale.
Another lawyer who argued against van Dongen being granted intervenor status believes he is simply trying to score political points.
