More people to vacation in US because of duty-free changes

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Now that you can bring more back from the US, we are looking at whether that is factoring into your summer vacation plans.

Doug Patton with BMO says it is. “We have had quite a few clients actually talk about that when we talk about cross-border plans.”

“It’s definitely becoming part of the conversation in terms of how much they are allowed to spend and how much they are allowed to bring back,” he explains.

A survey of our summer plans has more of us taking a vacation this year; two thirds of us will stay in the country and nearly a quarter will head south. That interest in heading over the border is up from last year.

Patton credits more than just duty-free allowances for the shift. “The affordability and the dollar. It’s still an attractive vacation destination.”

“New York, Florida, and California [are the] usual suspects in terms of where people are travelling. Interestingly, Washington State has made the most popular list this year.”

We are also keeping to a budget – on average that’s $2,000 and we’re using reward programs to keep costs down.  The survey also found women more likely than men to say they are responsible for planning the family’s vacation.
