Bear killed after attacking man in Whistler

WHISTLER (NEWS1130) – One minute you’re relaxing in your hot tub and the next, you’re running for your life.

Sgt. Steve LeClair with Whistler RCMP says that’s exactly what happened to a Coquitlam man yesterday afternoon.

“He had his back to the forest. All of a sudden he felt a heavy blow to the back of his head which propelled him forward in the hot tub. He turned around and found himself face-to-face with a black bear,” explains LeClair. “He yelled, got out of the hot tub, retreated inside the residence and called police.”

LeClair says Mounties located the bear about 100 metres away as it walked into wooded area. “Police contained the area, located the bear and destroyed it.”

He notes this kind of attack is very uncommon in the Whistler-area.

“This is certainly the first unprovoked attack [in my five years]. We did have a incident several years ago where somebody got swatted when they got too close to a bear and had blocked of the bear’s escape route.”

The man suffered about three cuts to the back of his head. LeClair says he is going to be OK.
