Some Toronto city councillors worry about another ‘summer of the gun’

TORONTO, Ont. – The fatal shooting at the Eaton Centre in Toronto, Ont., on Saturday follows a rise in the number of shootings in the city in 2012, after years of decline.

And while some political leaders are trying to reassure residents that the city is safe, others worry about another “summer of the gun.”

The Toronto Sun reported there have been more than 100 shooting incidents in the city so far — paralleling the pace set in 2005, which was referred to as the “summer of the gun.”

This has led councillors Adam Vaughan and Giorgio Mammoliti to worry that Toronto could be facing part two of “summer of the gun.”

“There’s just something that tells me that gun’s coming out again like the way it was a few years ago, and may be worse,” Councillor Mammoliti said.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty are trying to calm the nerves of Toronto residents.

Harper assured that those responsible will be met with the full force of the law, while McGuinty pointed out that Ontario is not defined by one incident of criminal violence.
