Can existing Pattullo Bridge be used as pedestrian walkway?

By

NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS1130) – It’s old and needs to be replaced, but could the Pattullo Bridge be re-used as a pedestrian walkway and bike path linking New Westminster and Surrey? A community forum tonight will explore that idea.

People at the discussion will hear from a panel of urban planning experts about the possibility of refurbishing the old bridge.

But Reena Meijer Drees with New Westminster Environmental Partners is opposed; she says too much work would have to be done to make it seismically safe for users.

“I’m really concerned about the cost because it sounds like we’re talking about a new bridge plus refurbishing the old one. That is not a cheap solution,” she argues.

“Those aren’t cheap things to do. Yeah, you can recycle the bridge if you like, but you still need to do something about those footings. That’s not cheap either,” she adds.

The town hall meeting happens at the River Market in New Westminster at 7 p.m.
