Vancouver should’ve banned plastic bags first: locals

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – While the idea of getting rid of plastic bags has been floated around here before, Toronto is now going ahead with it. Starting next year, stores won’t be allowed to provide plastic bags to their customers.

A number of Vancouverites we’ve spoken to are surprised Toronto has beaten us to the punch when it comes to banning those bags that keep piling up in landfills.

“I don’t know why we haven’t banned plastic bags; I’d like it if we would, especially because sometimes, when I forget my bags, I always feel really guilty,” explains one woman this morning.

We caught up with a man on his way to pick up a few things at a store. He doesn’t think we need plastic bags and Vancouver should have been the first to get rid of them.

“We’re supposed to be the progressive city, the greener city. Greenpeace started here,” he points out.

Several other major cities around the world, such as Los Angeles, San Fransisco and Seattle, already have similar policies in place. Many Vancouverites feel it’s only a matter of time before such a by-law makes its way to the west coast.
