METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Housing starts in Metro Vancouver cooled in May, according to a federal government agency.

Construction began on 1,692 homes last month, down 15 per cent from a year earlier. The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation says starts on multi-family homes, mostly condos, fell 18 per cent while single-detached houses were down one per cent.

CMHC figures show condo starts in Coquitlam fell by more than half, although there were increases in multi-family starts in Surrey and Vancouver.

The drop in single-family home starts was mostly due to Surrey. Vancouver-area housing starts are still up 7 per cent year-to-date.
