Province to protect part of ancient Marpole burial ground

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The province is protecting a strip of land where human remains were found, but not the rest of the site where the development will actually be built.

The province is protecting a strip of the property about 5 metres wide, but not the rest of the land.

Bob Ransfrod says work on the site has stopped.

“It really has little impact because on our own, we’ve suspended any work on the site and we’re involved in discussions about the future of the project.”

He says they are open to moving forward with the project or getting paid out for the land.

Meanwhile, the Musqueam First Nation says the province is inching toward protecting the burial ground but it still has a long way to go.

Cecilia Point with the band says that is not good enough for her.

“They’re sort of inching along, and it’s not really too different from what they’ve offering, they have used words like we would respectfully remove the burials, and that’s not acceptable.”

Band members have been protesting against the development, and they staged a demonstration last week that blocked traffic on the Arthur Laing Bridge.
