Privacy commissioner urges kids to think before they click

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – ‘Think before you click’ and ‘the web never forgets’ – just a couple of slogans Canada’s privacy commissioner wants young people to remember when they’re online.

Jennifer Stoddart says it’s so easy to compromise privacy when cruising the web and interacting with social networking sites.

“It’s great to be spontaneous, but you know if you are too impulsive online it can get you into trouble. I must say what is encouraging is some of the young people I met this year know about these things.”

One thing her office is telling young people to do is clean up the friends list on Facebook, to reduce the chances of something inappropriate being rapidly duplicated and forwarded.

Stoddart’s office is also warning young people and their parents about a social networking site called Nexopia.

She says the company is misleading users to believe they can delete their personal information.

“One of the things we had problems with is their privacy policy, which is where things should be spelled out. It’s not clear what is happening with personal information. “

She says the office has taken Nexopia to federal court over the matter.
