Smog over Lower Mainland will only get worse: expert

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – We told you earlier this week climate change is causing sea levels to rise and increasing the risk of forest fires, but there is another weather-related concern expected to hit the Lower Mainland.

Climate change expert Dr. Gordon McBean with Western University says smog is only expected to get worse in the years to come, especially on those really hot summer days.

“As the temperatures go up, the chemistry that creates smog from those chemicals gets enhanced. So we have to be worried about hot, smoggy days and the health effects,” notes McBean.

He says anyone with cardiovascular problems or respiratory issues may find it harder to breath.

“With those hot days and continuing emissions from smog creating chemicals, we will have more smog events, from Vancouver up through to Abbotsford and Chilliwack.”

McBean adds we should have warnings ahead of time for people with medical concerns and proper services to those affected are just some of the solutions needed to keep people healthy.
