VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Three in five Canadians support banning plastic shopping bags, according to an Angus Reid survey.

Toronto has decided to ban plastic bags, yet the survey found people in Ontario are the least supportive of such a move in the entire country.

Higher levels of support were found among women and young people. Those in Altantic Canada, Quebec, Alberta, and BC are more likely to endorse a ban.

According to a US report, plastic bags are either restricted or completely banned in over a quarter of the world’s countries. Some of this is done by charging for bags, but others like China, South Africa and three Australian states and territories prohibit them all together.

According to media reports in China, the country’s ban has decreased the number of plastic bags used by over 50 per cent, or over 40 billion a year.
