Silent vigil held for victim in body parts slaying

MONTREAL (NEWS1130) – People moved by the gruesome details surrounding a Chinese student’s death gathered to remember him in a Montreal park Thursday evening.
The vigil was held a day after police confirmed a hand and foot delivered to two Vancouver schools belong to Jun Lin.
Canadian Press reporter Nelson Wyatt says about 100 people held candles and lit incense.
“It was a silent vigil. There were no speeches or anything. It was mainly some people who knew Jun Lin and a lot of people who didn’t know him, but were touched by the horrific nature of this crime who came together in silent contemplation,” he says.
Lin’s parents did not attend.
“Possiby because it has been a very emotional time for them. It’s been very difficult for them, but they did send their thanks to all the people who came and expressed thanks for all their support,” explains Wyatt.
Lin’s torso was found stuffed in a suitcase outside a Montreal apartment building on May 29, the same day a hand and a foot were sent to political parties in Ottawa.
The other hand arrived at False Creek elementary and a foot was delivered to St. George’s private school last week.
Luka Magnotta, the man accused of killing and dismembering Lin, has been moved into pre-extradition custody in Germany, and could be back in Canada within weeks.
