NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS1130) -  It’s official — the seaside Westminster Pier Park is now open.

Despite the pouring rain, many showed up to the opening celebration of the park.

New West resident Andrew Murray says the park is a great step forward for his community.

”I think New West is well on its way to becoming a really attractive place to live and shop and hang out,” he says. “So it’s pretty exciting.”

The $25.1-million park will include a 600 metre boardwalk, a festival lawn, a concession stand, elevated viewpoints, benches, picnic grounds, a basketball court and two playgrounds.

Another local, Clifford Thompson, says he is happy for his young son.

”There will now be lots of playgrounds for him to run around in,” he exclaims. “It will be quite easy for us as we only have one SkyTrain stop to come down here.”

The city has received provincial and federal government contributions for two-thirds of the project through the Build Canada Fund.

The festivities included main stage entertainment, recreational activities in the Kids’ and Sports Zones, and food from River Market vendors.
