GIBSONS (NEWS1130) – A search is underway in the waters off Gibsons after a 12-foot boat was discovered with no one on board.
The Coast Guard says the runabout was found partially swamped, with the motor running.
“So we’re doing a search for possibly a person in the water. We don’t have any reports of anyone missing or any stolen boat reports,” says Darren Morley at the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria. “But because of that, just the way the boat was found, we’re doing a search.”
Morley says the Coast Guard Hover Craft Unit, the crew from Kitsilano, and the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue teams from Gibsons and Horseshoe Bay are all involved in the search.
“We prepare for the worst and hope for the best. There’s no indication one way or another that there’s anything wrong. It’s just unusual to come across a boat with this amount of gear in it and awash.”
Morley adds they are unsure as to how long the boat has been there.
