BC movie industry pushes Ottawa for national strategy

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The BC movie industry wants Ottawa to step in with a national strategy to attract productions to Canada.

Peter Leitch with the Motion Picture Production Association of British Columbia want to establish uniform tax credits for movies across all provinces. He says BC is losing business to eastern Canada.

“We’ve seen certain companies now that have migrated to Ontario and Quebec as a result of the differential in tax credits,” explains Leitch. “That doesn’t seem to make too much sense to me when certainly we have a lot of other advantages here.”

He believes it doesn’t help Canada to have individual provinces trying to one up each other.

“We want to make sure we’re competitive on a global basis, specifically with other States. To compete against each other in terms of other provinces doesn’t make much sense and could be detrimental to overall employment in Canada and the film and television industry.”

Leitch is meeting with Heritage Minister James Moore to talk about establishing a level playing field.
