VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – While Washington State admits it is having a tough year with an overwhelming number of whooping cough cases confirmed, medical experts say it should not sway you from going there.

The Whatcom County Health Department  recently told News1130 about what the situation is like across the line.

Disease Response and Control Manager German Gonzalez says hand washing and in some cases vaccinations are the best way to stop the spread, especially to visitors down for the weekend.

“We have seen an increase in trends since late last year and early this year but now we’re just reaching levels that haven’t been seen for quite a while here,” he says.

More than 200 additional cases of whooping cough were diagnosed there last week, bringing the total to more than 2300 this year.
