Bad weather bad for seasonal businesses

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Just three days left before summer begins and we’re finally expected to get the weather that fits the season.

That’s good news for seasonal businesses that rely heavily on the sun and warmer temperatures.

June is normally a time when bike rental shops are busy, not just with locals but plenty of tourists who come out to play. But Geoff Sharein with Spokes Bicycle Rentals says that hasn’t been the case this year.

“Certainly it has been a disappointing June for us. The term ‘June-u-ary’ keeps getting thrown around, and it seems sadly more accurate. The weather has definitely affected us and numbers have been down,” notes Sharein.

He says on cold, dreary days, the number of wheels rolling out the door drops dramatically.

“When the weather doesn’t co-operate, more than 50 per cent [of business] I’d say [drops],” believes Sharein. “Weather is a huge factor in our business. Sunny days we’re running full tilt and will have 20 staff on. Drizzly days maybe we’ll need four and not a lot of bikes go out.”

Sharein hopes the days ahead will be a lot brighter and warmer so business will pick up.

Lucky for him, the forecast calls for some sunny or partly sunny conditions this week
