Vancouver creates transportation ‘vision’ for next 30 years

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Vancouver City council is creating a transportation ‘vision’ for the next 30 years and there’s not much in the plan for drivers.

Vancouver realizes the city’s road space is limited but says it has no plans for new roads anytime in the near future.

Updating its Transportation 2040 plan, the city is still shifting all its weight on to getting people out of their cars.

Transportation Director Jerry Dobrovolny admits our city has a traffic problem.

“Particularly the challenge for us in Vancouver is limited road space,” he says.

But he adds the plan doesn’t involve creating more roads–it’s getting drivers to walk, bike, and ride the bus.

He also admits TransLink is going to need big money to keep up with these big plans.

“It requires tremendous increases in transit capacity,” he says. “We know that TransLink has a number of challenges that they’re dealing with now. We understand the fiscal reality.”

How the plan will move forward without that cash isn’t clear.

The city took online input from 8,000 people to shape its future transportation policies for phase one of the initiative, and residents have until July 13 to give feedback on their website.
