VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Vancouver Whitecaps held their final training session before a visit by the undermanned New York Red Bulls Wednesday night. New York come to town without stars Thierry Henry and Rafa Marquez. Henry, France’s all-time leading scorer, is nursing a calf injury he suffered while training last month while Marquez is also out with a leg injury.
“If we get a chance to take it to them, we have to. If we were on the road missing a couple of guys, I don’t think they would think twice or feel bad for us, ” said Whitecaps keeper Joe Cannon after practice today at BC Place.
It’s not the first time that soccer fans in Vancouver have been denied a chance to see Henry in person. The star French international missed last year’s highly anticipated May 28th match at Empire Field with a swollen right knee. The Whitecaps and Red Bulls would tie that game 1-1. They would also play to a 1-1 draw in the rematch in September in New Jersey.
New York, like Vancouver, sits third in its conference and are coming off a 3-1 in Chicago that ended the Red Bulls’ six-match unbeaten streak. Vancouver will be trying to build on Saturday’s thrilling 1-0 win over Colorado at BC Place before playing the next five games on the road.
Vancouver will also be without speedy Jamaican Darren Mattocks who received a red card against Colorado Saturday and will be suspended for Wednesday’s match. Game time Wednesday is 8 p.m.
