Many parents tired of BC teachers’ labour dispute

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Teachers are expected to take to the streets this afternoon to speak out against Bill 27, a law they claim strips the BC Teachers Federation of the right to bargain class sizes and composition.

Much of the school year has been characterized by conflict, and parents say they’re sick and tired of hearing about it. For many them, there’s been too much back and forth and they’re done with the ongoing argument, unless there’s a final solution on the table.

Yesterday, we told you the union representing 40,000 teachers in BC is taking the provincial government back to court over the bill, which was passed a decade ago. But aside from any new twists and turns in the dispute, many parents have tuned out.

“It’s just something you hear, hear and hear over and over and then you just become kind of numb to the whole thing,” says one man.

“It’s constant again and again kind of response. And my reaction is kind of like, ‘Isn’t that done yet?’ When you keep hearing it, it [becomes] stagnant news,” says another.

Others who support the teachers and their demands say they’ve stopped paying attention altogether because there has been a year’s worth of ongoing dialogue between the two sides.

The case will begin on December 3rd and it’s expected to last four days.
