What kind of shape is the Expo Line really in?

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Some people are not impressed with the condition of the Expo Line, after concerns about its cleanliness were re-tweeted by the mayor of Surrey.

News1130’s Andrea Macpherson was riding the SkyTrain this afternoon, getting a first hand look at the condition of the station. She rode the train from Waterfront station to Surrey, and along the way she says bits of trash were discovered, but says King George was the worst.

“I stumbled upon a giant pile of newspapers, an Orange Julius knocked over on a seat, and a woman actually smoking as she headed up the platform, I would say that was the worse station for trash today.”

Drew Snider with TransLink says it’s riders who need to be taking more responsibility, and one rider agreed, saying there should be more recycling at stations.

Snider says the train cars are spot cleaned every couple of hours, stations are mopped down nightly, and power-washed monthly.

“It really does make it look junky. there’s also a safety issue; if you’ve got rain, people can slip as it gets slippery. There’s also the possibility that stuff can pile up and catch fire in the guideway, or cause some other service disruption.”

He says they are as adamant about keeping it as clean as they can.

General dust, grime and wear-and-tear was spotted on the older trains.
