Toll hikes for Golden Ears Bridge

By

LANGLEY (NEWS1130) – As you get ready to start paying tolls on the Port Mann Bridge, we’re finding out tolls are going up on the Golden Ears Bridge.

The new pricing goes into effect on July 15th. The increase is about two per cent; it’s an annual hike based on inflation. Regular cars will pay five cents more. It will cost an additional 20 cents for large trucks.

Pay-as-you go is still going to be the most expensive way to travel the bridge. A small car will be $4.20 and a large truck will be just over $10.

Langley City Mayor Peter Fassbender knows many people don’t use the bridge.

“I think the big challenge is getting the usage up… [TransLink is] looking at day-part usage, so lower rates when the usage is traditionally down anyways,” he explains.

Fassbender understands people are frustrated with the tolls. “That’s once of the reasons many of the mayors have talked about a much broader road pricing policy that may look at tolling throughout the region.”

He says the reality is the bridge is here, even though many people don’t use it. So, he feels there really isn’t any other option but to increase the tolls.
