What will they do with Bobby Lou?

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – You’ll get a glimpse of the next Canucks‘ prospect when they pick 26th overall at tonight’s NHL Entry Draft.

But most of the talk surrounds Cory Schneider and Roberto Luongo. That’s because the team has taken phone calls on both goalies leading up to the draft.

The consensus seems to be to deal Luongo. But Rogers Sportsnet’s John Shannon says having 10 years left on Bobby Lou’s contract is major baggage.

“However, there are some people that are probably going to be willing to absorb that contract for many different reasons. If his contract was four years at $4 million a year, they would have had dozens of teams knocking at the door to sign,” he notes.

Before Luongo or anyone else suits up again, there will be a new collective bargaining agreement, which means that contract could be re-shapped.

Shannon tells us there are at least two teams that are interested in Luongo. “The Toronto Maple Leafs and… probably the Florida Panthers.”

“[The Panthers] think they need to improve their goaltending, even though they have a bright young goaltender on the horizon, to have someone of Roberto Luongo’s ilk who’s familiar in the market, would probably be a wise thing,” he explains.

Luongo passed Canucks legend Kirk McLean for the most wins of all-time in January.
