Some displaced by floods in Sicamous can return home

SICAMOUS, BC (NEWS1130) – About 150 people in flood-ravaged Sicamous are being allowed back into their homes – for now.

Flash floods ripped through the small town over the weekend, damaging houses, washing out streets and sweeping away cars.

“The evacuation order for Swansea Point has been lifted and residents are currently…making arrangements to…[get] back to their homes,” says Sicamous Fire Chief Brett Ogino.

“The evacuation order for Two Mile (region) is currently under discussion and we hope to have that lifted,” he adds.

Along with those 150 people, approximately 200 other in Two Mile are still out of their homes.

Ogino says geotechnicians flew over the town yesterday, checking debris flows that caused much of the flooding damage.

Emergency Management BC expects Sicamous to ask the province for help under the disaster financial assistance program, which is meant to assist homeowners whose flood damage is not covered by property insurance.
