VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There’s exactly one month to go until the Summer Games in London. How will our Canadian athletes do this year?
UBC Educational Studies Professor Rob VanWynsberghe believes our winning spirit will be key; he’s basing that on the success of our athletes when Vancouver hosted the Winter Games in 2010.
“That spirit is really important to track, because that’s the kind of thing that politicians and others can take advantage of afterwards, to say ‘This was a great party,'” he explains.
VanWynsberghe tells us investing in our athletes hit a turning point in the ’88 Olympics in Calgary.
“If you think about it, some of those athletes in ’88, that were maybe very young, got inspired and began to get the support from “Own the Podium” and other policies. [They’re] probably just maturing now, so it makes sense,” he says.
