Refund from airlines if flight cancelled or overbooked

OTTAWA (NEWS1130) – You will soon have more options if your flight is overbooked, delayed or cancelled. But only if you are flying with Air Canada, WestJet and Air Transat.

The Canadian Transportation Agency has announced that passengers should be allowed to have a full refund and a free trip home if a cancellation or overbooking throws a wrench into your travel plans.

Claire Newell with Jubilee Travel figures other carriers will follow suit.

“I would warn them to still get travel insurance that would completely cover them, especially if they are in fact tied in with an airline connected with another travel service like a tour or a cruise or something. That way they would be covered for cancellations, delays, interruptions…all that sort of thing.”

Until now, those airlines had discretion over whether to grant a refund or even rebook passengers.

“But this is actually just for the flights, so let’s say you have a flight booked to London with Transat and you have also booked a coach tour…and you are going to miss it…you will not be refunded for that coach tour.”

Newell cautions though it is still important to understand the terms of this in case you run into problems.
