VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Some sobering stats about traffic fatalities to mull over as you head off on this long weekend.

Typically two people die on Canada Day, and another 150 people are injured on BC roads.

The top reason for the crashes? Impaired drivers.

A Surrey mom is now the reluctant spokesperson about drinking and driving.

Markita Kaulius lost her daughter Kassandra last year to a suspected drunk driver..

“There are no words to describe what it’s like to a family,” she stresses. “It’s devastating to a family. We have two other children who lost their sibling, their best friend.”

After some legal problems with the new drunk-driving law, police are now, once again,  able to impound cars as soon as they suspect a driver is impaired.
