Canadians taking aid to Cuba

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – One local group is spending their Canada Day at the border challenging the American blockade of Cuba.

The Peace Caravan is traveling to Cuba trying to bring humanitarian help to the Caribbean country, but bringing unlicensed aid to Cuba is illegal according to US law.

Tamara Hansen with the group says they are prepared for any type of confrontation after nearly being turned around last year.

“Last year was the first time that we had problems at the Peace Arch border crossing in six years. We’re hoping that they will have understood that we are serious and we are taking this aid to Cuba and that they will respect our right to do that,” stresses Hansen.

“The aid will go via boat from Mexico to Cuba,” she adds. “We are taking sports equipment, medical equipment, different construction material — all things that have been donated by hospitals, doctors and people from their homes.”

The Caravan to Cuba is celebrating its 20th anniversary and will also see groups cross in Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec.
