VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – BC’s unemployment rate dropped sharply in June, but it was partly due to fewer people looking for work.

Statistics Canada says our jobless rate sank eight tenths of a point to 6.6 per cent.

BC added a net 3,600 jobs in June, two-thirds of them full-time positions. But the labour force fell by 17,800 as the participation rate dipped 0.5 per cent. Compared to a year earlier, BC’s employment was up 2.3 per cent.

Nationwide, employment rose by a net 7,300 positions, beating the average of economists’ expectations. The unemployment rate fell a tenth of a point from May to 7.2 per cent.

Full-time employment in Canada rose by 29,300, while 22,000 part-time jobs were lost. Public sector work led the gain, while the manufacturing sector had its first employment drop since last November.
