Foreign national sentenced in Vancouver human smuggling case

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A French citizen has been sentenced in Vancouver to four years in prison for crimes related to human smuggling.

Mikael Prone was arrested in Nov. 2011 at Vancouver International Airport after getting off a flight from China and seeking entry for a couple weeks of sightseeing and business.

A secondary search of his luggage found two Israeli passports that didn’t belong to him.

On the same flight as Prone were two Iranian siblings with no travel documents.

Prone is thought to have been smuggling the Iranians into Canada with the plan to leave them at the airport for customs officials to attend to.

Prone was found guilty on May 31 of five counts involving human trafficking.
