News1130’s weekend sports round-up

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A couple of local summer squads are around town this weekend.

CFL

The BC Lions look to make it 2-0 in the young season when they host the 0-1 Hamilton Tiger-Cats at the roof-opened BC Place at 7pm tonight.

There are no major line-up changes for BC as many Lions thought there was room for improvement, despite opening the season with a 17-point win over the Blue Bombers.

The Tiger-Cats feature a couple of players on offence that are very familiar to fans in the CFL West. Henry Burris, who spent a decade in Calgary, is Hamilton’s quarterback. Slot back Andy Fantuz was a very popular member of the Saskatchewan Roughriders for six seasons.

The Tabbies’ new head coach is George Cortez, who spent 18 seasons in the CFL. Seven of those were in Calgary as Burris’s offensive coordinator. Before returning north of the 49th parallel, Cortez was the quarterbacks coach in the NFL with Buffalo.

Two great defensive linemen from the 1980s will be honoured at halftime, as Rick Klassen and Nick Hebler will be inducted into the Lions Ring of Honour.

Although this is a vastly different Tiger-Cats squad, Hamilton is the last team to beat BC. The Tabbies took out the the Leos 42-10 at Ivor Wynne Stadium last October 22nd.

MLS

Whitecaps FC return to Carson, California for the third time this season on Saturday, as they meet Chivas USA. Vancouver won its first ever road game in MLS against the same opponent on St. Patrick’s Day, 1-0.

Chivas shares the stadium with the LA Galaxy. The Caps were blanked 3-0 by the defending MLS champions two weeks ago.

Martin Rennie’s side is coming off a 1-0 win in in Colorado on July 4th.

Vancouver currently holds down third spot in the Western Conference with 29 points, which is 10 better then the seventh place Goats.

Kickoff is at 7:30pm.

NWL

The Vancouver Canadians look to take the final game of a three-game series with Salem Kaiser tonight at 7pm in Oregon.

The C’s then start a three-gameset at Nat Bailey Stadium on Saturday night with the first place club in the Northwest League West division, Everett.

The AquaSox currently have a 1.5 game lead on Vancouver.  Sunday game is a 1:05pm.

Wimbledon

For the third time this season, Vancouver tennis player Filip Peliwo has reached the junior final of a major tournament. The
18-year-old has lost in the championship game of the Australian and French Open tournaments. Peliwo is seeded fourth and will meet the top seed Luke Saville at Wimbledon. The Aussie took out the Vancouverite in Melbourne in January.

Hastings Racecourse

There is thoroughbred horse racing at Hastings Racecourse on Saturday and Sunday. First race on both days at the PNE track is 1:50pm.
