Toddler and grandma die after accident at Surrey pool

SURREY (NEWS1130) – An awful tragedy involving a grandmother trying to rescue her 20-month-old grandson took place this past weekend.
Around 9 p.m. Sunday, Ivan Yousif and his 51-year-old grandmother Warina Nissan were found in a pool at a housing complex at 150th Street and 105th Avenue.
RCMP Sgt. Murray Hedderson says when Mounties arrived, fire and ambulance crews were performing CPR. Both Nissan and Yousif were unresponsive and rushed to hospital.
“The young child, despite the best efforts from the hospital staff, was unable to be revived,” says Hedderson.
The Nissan was put on life support in the hospital, however Mounties say she succumbed to her injuries last night.
The RCMP says this appears to be a tragic accident.
Corporal Drew Grainger says this is a good reminder to have basic water survival skills.
“It’s an unimaginable tragedy, we always have to be mindful of young persons and their vulnerability around bodies of water,” he warns. “It’s also a reminder for us as parents and guardians to have an awareness of our own abilities as lifesavers if we come across a child or another person that might be in need of being saved.
