Hot tubs, tires, and bears: Oh my!

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A hot tub near the Port Mann bridge caused some traffic tie-ups for Highway 1 commuters yesterday, but even that isn’t the weirdest thing crews have had to deal with over the years.

News1130 is looking into some interesting and sometimes dangerous clean-up situations!

Mattresses, tires, lumber… that’s all in a day’s work for Mainroad. But Al Rogers with the highway maintenance company tells us sometimes they receive just the strangest calls.

“One thing that was rather funny was a truck that was transporting bees flipped over. These things escaped and they are flying all over the place and one of the fellas I was talking to said he actually got stung. We can pick up the crates but there is not much we can do about all these bees flying all over,” he explains.

The messiest call he can remember? “An egg truck turned over once. That was a little difficult to clean up. Very slippery for the fellas.”

The scariest was when they got a report of a dead bear.

“This bear wasn’t actually dead; it was knocked out,” explains Rogers. “We showed up with a pick-up truck and we dragged it on to the tailgate lifter. [We had] it inside the pickup truck and it woke up! The guys all went crazy and they all hopped in the truck and shut the door. But it didn’t take long for it to jump out of the truck and run away.”
