Friday the 13th BikeFest brings more than 100,000 people to small Ontario town

PORT DOVER, Ont. – Under sunny skies, a Friday the 13th tradition is rolling along in the small town of Port Dover, Ont.

Police estimate that by mid-morning, about 120,000 people, many on motorcycles, had descended on the town on the shores of Lake Erie, to take part in the last BikeFest of the year.

Const. Ed Sanchuk of the Norfolk Ontario Provincial Police says hundreds of motorcycles are continuing to roll into town.

There have only been a few law enforcement issues so far.

Sanchuk says there have been a couple of cases of heat stroke, a few alcohol-related arrests, and an incident where a motorcyclist struck a police cruiser parked at a roadblock.

Sanchuk says there is a highly visible police presence, and that officers are there to make sure that everyone has a safe time at BikeFest.

According to BikeFest’s website, the event dates back to 1981 when a local man and about 25 friends got together at a Port Dover hotel, and had such a good time they decided to do it every Friday the 13th.
