Hot, dry conditions expected in BC could bring campfire bans

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The number of active fires burning in the BC back country nearly doubled this week thanks to this hot, dry weather.

There are 49 active wildfires in this province, many of them caused by people.

The wet spring helped with a slow start to the fire season, but Erin Catherall with the Provincial Wildfire Coordination Centre says that’s all behind us now. “We are anticipating hot and dry conditions again, and some lightning activity within the province.”

Open fires are still not allowed in Whistler, near Prince George or around Kamloops. There are no campfire bans anywhere else in the province, as long as they are kept under half a metre in size.

“It is something that we’re monitoring day by day. Should the fire danger rating change, we can implement a ban,” notes Catherall.

“We really are encouraging camping and people that are out enjoying the back country to be extra careful with their campfires,” she adds.
