Vancouver food banks in need of summer donations

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) –  Hunger knows no season.

The Greater Vancouver Food Bank is seeing a higher demand for its service this summer.

The food bank’s Kay Thody says kids being out of school is one factor why more people are in need.

“One of the things about hunger is that it affects people year round,” she stresses. “Not just at the time when maybe people are just traditionally thinking about holiday or charity or that type of thing. We do experience an increase of needs during the summer months, we also experience a decrease traditionally in donations at this time of year.”

The 15 depots around Metro are all seeing a 10 per cent increase in demand compared to last year. Last year, the Greater Vancouver Food Bank was serving on average 25,000 people per week, whereas this year, that number has spiked to 27,000 a week.

“We’re seeing a dramatic increase in first time users at the food back,” says Thody. “We’re also seeing an increase in seniors, and an increase in families.”
