Two dead after mass shooting in Scarborough

SCARBOROUGH, ON. (NEWS1130) – Toronto Police have taped off an area surrounding a home in Scarborough, Ontario after up to 12 were shot at a house party on Danzig Avenue near Morningside Avenue.  Two people are dead and as many as 19 others are injured.

The party had about 100 people in attendance, many of whom described the scene as chaotic.

Some of those hurt are said to include a 12-year-old girl, a 16-year-old shot in the arm, and a 59-year-old woman shot in the back.  A 19-year-old was shot twice in the head, a 20-year-old woman was shot in the back.  There are reports a 19-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other information about the other victims has been released.

It’s unknown what the motive behind the shooting is but a handgun was recovered nearby. One person has been taken into custody.

According to preliminary statistics on the Toronto Police website, there have been 140 reported shootings as of July 16th.  That’s an increase of about 32 per cent from the same time in 2011.

Sixteen people have died during gun-related homicides on the streets of Toronto since the beginning of the year.  That number last year was 14.
