VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s expected to help small businesses with limited inventory as well as BC’s wine industry. Changes to the province’s liquor laws mean you can now bring your own wine when dining out.
If restaurants choose to take part, anywhere from $10 to $50 could be charged as a corkage fee. But Minister Rich Coleman says the idea is to give restaurants flexibility, so a set fee wasn’t introduced.
“We had consultations with the industry and they really felt it was dependent on the restaurants. Some felt that they wouldn’t charge any because they’re a small restaurant and they just wanted [it as] a service for the customers.”
“Some high-end restaurants that have expensive investments and major wine cellars may not feel that that’s what they want to offer. So we said to them ‘We’ll give you total flexibility and you guys can make the choice.'”
The new rules take effect today; they’ve been long-since been called for and critics call them overdue.
