Evergreen Line gets addition, before it’s even built

COQUITLAM (NEWS1130) – The Evergreen Line is still four years from opening and already, an addition is being announced. Coquitlam will benefit from a third station.

Seven million dollars, as part of  a public-private partnership, will build Lincoln station at Coquitlam Centre’s northeast corner. But there are other planned stops just two blocks away on either side of this location. The rest of the funding through the P3 partnership will come from the City of Coquitlam and Pensionfund Realty Limited, a private real estate company.

Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart doesn’t see this as overkill because density is the goal.

“You’ll see on the Millenium Line, for example… there are stations that, 10 years later, have no density around them yet. It’s really hard to imagine why that was the location of the station. We don’t want that to happen on the Evergreen Line,” he explains.

Stewart adds a lack of rapid transit has been a key factor in holding back development for 20 years.

The station will open with the rest of the Evergreen Line, which is still on-time to open in the summer of 2016.

“I was called ‘foolish’ when I said the Evergreen Line would get built, and we’re getting it built. I’m confident that we can still get it built by the timelines that have been set out,” says Stewart.
