Vancouver considers relaxing fireworks bylaws

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Safety is number one concern for Vancouver’s Fire Chief, and would have to be properly addressed in order for him to fully back a bylaw relaxing the rules surrounding fireworks in the city.

Chief John McKearney says their is a report in the works to see if this is something to consider.

If it is a go, staffing levels on celebrations like Chinese New Years and Canada Day would be similar to Halloween.

“What we do on Halloween is we turn out all of our fire apparatus and all of our inspectors . We position them in parks and other areas where we hear them going off. Firefighters and fire inspectors are responsible, if there is inappropriate use of fireworks, to go and look for the permits.”

The main thing he wants to make sure of, is that fireworks end up in the right hands.
