Colorado shooting victim narrowly missed Toronto shooting

AURORA, CO (NEWS1130) – A Toronto junior hockey player says his girlfriend, who narrowly escaped a deadly shooting at Toronto’s Eaton Centre last month, is among the victims of a shooting in Colorado.

Jay Meloff said 24-year-old Jessica Ghawi was killed when a gunman barged into a crowded Denver-area theatre during a midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises,” and opened fire, killing at least 12 people and injuring 50 others.

Meloff said he last spoke with Ghawi right before she went into the movie theatre Thursday night.

Ghawi, who visited Meloff in Toronto last month, had written on her blog on June 5 that she was eating inside of the Eaton Centre food court when an “odd feeling” made her walk out of the shopping mall just minutes before shots rang out.

Local media reported that Ghawi, had moved from San Antonio to Denver to pursue her dream of becoming a TV sportscaster, was at the theatre with a longtime friend, who was injured in the shooting.

Shortly after the shooting, Ghawi’s brother Jordan tweeted “this could easily be the worst night of my life.”

Meloff said he’s planning to travel to Colorado.
