ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) – Abbortsford Police are searching for a man after he reportedly stole a purse right out of an elderly woman’s hands yesterday afternoon.

Constable Ian Macdonald says the 85-year-old woman withdrew money from an ATM and then drove a short distance away. The suspect reportedly attacked her when she stopped and got out of her car.

“Unfortunately there is a suspect out there who is looking to prey on people,” Macdonald says. “In this instance, yesterday, he didn’t care that this was someone’s mother or grandmother — he just focused on the purse.”

He believes it’s possible the suspect watched the woman at the bank, followed her, and then waited for an opportunity to rob her after she parked her car.

“We’re not certain at this point that the individual was specifically targeting seniors, and for that reason we want to elevate everybody’s personal safety and awareness.”

The suspect is described as a white man between 18 and 20 years of age. He is 5 feet 8 inches tall, clean shaven, and was wearing a black hoodie and possibly a dark coloured baseball cap at the time of the attack.

Anyone with information about this attack or the identity of the suspect is asked to call Abbotsford Police at 604-859-5225 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
